Reflections from the 2022 AGM, in particular the discussion about the Pro’s and Cons’ of a Synod membership (ELCIC). By Tobias Finke, P.Eng, PMP, Chairman of the Calling Committee, member of the Transitional Committee

First of all, thank you to all that participated in the AGM last Sunday and contributed to the lively discussion re the pro’s and con’s of a proposed Synod membership with the ELCIC.

For the benefit of those members not physically present at the AGM, I can inform you that Church Council in January has passed a motion that entrusts me to start negotiating a potential membership with the BC Synod of the ELCIC. During the congregational survey done in 2021, 80% of you said yes to the question whether you’d support joining the Synod. It is time and long overdue to pick up the torch from the last attempt in 1993…and come to a consensus-based decision whether to join the ELCIC.

As I mentioned on Sunday, this will be paramount not only to become relevant in our community again but also to define our mission and purpose as we embark on the search for a new permanent pastor in 2023. We cannot and should not advertise for the permanent pastor role until we have reached consensus of who we are currently and who we are going to be in the future.

Secondly, I would like to announce that a Transition Committee has been appointed (the minutes from the 2021 AGM make reference to an ‘interim learning team’, page 8). The Transition Committee currently consists of Pastor Ingrid, Mrs. Andrea Mechler, Ms. Erika Plettner, Mr. Louis Eggers, Mr. Hans-Christian Behm, and myself. The committee will assist Pastor Ingrid in all things related to her work as our Transitional Pastor and lead the discussions with the Bishop jointly.

We completely understand this is a change, and change is painful, but I think all of you agree that change is necessary at the same time. We are committed to keeping the congregation informed about the discussions through newsletters, and perhaps more meetings throughout the summer, and invite your feedback. The intent is for a special meeting to be convened around September time to vote on a membership once the committee has presented and shared a complete list of the pro’s and con’s of a ELCIC membership.

We heard you loud and clear at the AGM; you would like more information, and understandably so. Although similar discussions were held by past Synod Committees (most recently led by Mr. Erich Kunz in 1993) the world has changed, the Synod has changed, and we have changed as a congregation. As proposed by Mr. Kunz at last week’s AGM, I would like to invite you to submit your questions to the church office no later than end of March 2022 so we can discuss them in the Transitional Committee and, if required, pass them on to the Bishop during our discussions. I propose to group the questions into the following categories:

  1. General Questions (Why, Why now, What do you fear losing, Are there other applicable Lutheran Synods, etc.)
  2. Administrative Questions (Constitution, Bylaws, Calling process, etc.)
  3. Theological Questions (Social statements by ELCIC, etc.)

I would like to thank the Synod Committee from 1993 for their immense effort, and so I would like to share an excerpt from their final report, because I couldn’t describe any better what the benefits of a membership were and are.

English translation of the excerpt document from 1993:

The question of joining one of the North American synods has been an important one for our congregation since the early days. The Evangelical Church in Germany provided us with generous financial support for the purchase of our church buildings with the explicit expectation that we would need to join one of the local synods soon.

We first initiated contact with the Western Canada Synod of the Lutheran Church in America (ELCIC’s predecessor) in our quest to join a synod. Despite this attempt being unsuccessful, over the years, the question of joining a synod has been put forward again and again at the AGM by various Church Council Presidents.

Reasons for synod membership

There are many reasons why it is important for our congregation to join a synod. Every congregation needs the community of Christians in other congregations to mutually strengthen and support their faith; and each pastor needs the community and the exchange with colleagues for mutual moral support. With the help of a bishop, a synod is tasked with building bridges between the various congregations. The bishop visits all congregations to foster unity among them. (…). One of the most important tasks of a Christian congregation is the financial and personal support of general missionary work. This task can only be carried out successfully if it happens in cooperation with other congregations and under the guidance of an umbrella organization/synod. For this reason, our congregation has always been co-operating with the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) and with Canadian synods such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC).

With the help of member congregations, a synod supports churches that do missionary work on a regional, national and international level. (…) A synod also supports the youth ministry, e.g. confirmation classes. In addition, the bishop is tasked with helping the congregation to find a new pastor by locating new candidates and presenting them to the congregation. The congregation retains the right to vote in and appoint the new pastor. The bishop cannot force a pastor upon a congregation. A synod assists the pastor and church council in all legal, theological and other matters. On a national level, a synod promotes the community of all Lutheran congregations in Canada. It supports their work in compiling and providing work materials and documents. (…)”

I invite you to explore together with the Transition Committee how we can connect with other congregations, pool resources and become the Body of Christ that is working in this city this neighbourhood and this worId.

I invite you to join me in prayer, that God would strengthen us to trust his ways, to guide us with his Holy Spirit and to live and work as one family in the body of Christ. May God lead us to a mutual understanding on how joining a synod can strengthen us as St. Mark’s Church, can help us to pool and save resources while discovering the community of believers in completely new ways.

I would like to close with today with the first verse of hymn 395 in German that really resonated with me recently.

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back

is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:62

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This is my last devotion for you as a pastor. It is tempting to look back. We do that – as humans, as people – especially when we are at crossroads. I could write now a lot about my time at St. Mark’s, instead I would like to look at what it can mean to “look back”.

Looking back, we all know, can impact us in very different ways. First: it can inspire us. Looking back can remind us of our roots, of our achievements, can inspire and encourage us in our move forward. It can give us a new – corrected – perspective of our presence. Looking back at the past of St. Mark’s, I am inspired by the vision that not only Pastor Gnauck, but also the founding members, had; and I am inspired by the trust in God they had, that “all would work out” after all.

Looking back can freeze us. If there is a shocking, devastating event in our past, we can get glued to it and freeze. Just like Lot’s wife turned into a pillar of salt, seeing the city of Sodom being destroyed. This kind of looking back does not only hinder us from moving forward, but it is actually damaging.

And looking back can also create nostalgia and a wrong sense of security. The “good old times” can hinder you and block you from moving forward. The idea that what worked in the past, will work now, can hinder inspiration. It can hinder us from exploring new ways and ideas, it can hinder us from listening to new voices, because all seems to be so cosy and “is working out”. At least seemingly. It often comes with: “We have always done it this way.”

This is what Jesus remarks to, in the Bible verse above. Jesus refers to the old kind of plowing, when the farmer had to walk behind the horse or the ox, making sure that the line was kept straight. Looking back would be a great hindrance to that.

Jesus relates this word to God’s kingdom: it is about moving and looking forward, not getting stuck and distracted, not getting the lines mixed up, because one is too focused on what lies behind.

I wish, no, I hope and pray, for St. Mark’s, that you will get the line straight, so that it can continue to bring the Gospel to the people in our city, in our neighbourhood and everyone who needs to hear it.

In God’s love,
Pastor Kristina

Farewell for Pastor Breit

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

„There is a time for everything” and “All depends on our possessing, God’s free grace and constant blessing” – these are the words that have been in my thoughts over the last week. My time at St. Marks is drawing to an end. For 12 ½ years I have been your “English” Pastor, I have been “Associate Pastor” in this congregation.

I have asked Church Council to keep my farewell “small” and limited to a Bilingual Service. This is also due to the fact that a reception could only be attended by people with proof of vaccination.

This last service of mine will be on March 27th at 9:30am at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. I hope that many of you can join us this morning – either in-person or online. For this particular service you will not be required to be vaccinated to attend. I truly look forward to share this farewell with as many as possible.

Some of you have asked me about my future plans. I want to clarify: for the next three years, I will go to school, work and build a new career-path for me. If and how I will continue to be (an active) part of St. Marks only the future will tell. And to avoid any misunderstanding, I want to be clear: I am not intending to apply to a pastoral position at St. Marks at any point in the future.

Instead, I pray that God will guide St. Marks with his Holy Spirit to find the people suitable and necessary to lead St. Marks into the 21st century and bless all of you richly. And, I ask you, the members of St. Marks, to support Pastor Ingrid and her team in the work she does to bring St. Mark’s forward. Please bear with her even if you disagree or cannot see where steps are leading.

Kristina Breit

COVID Update

Dear Members and Friends,

I noticed that there has been some confusion about the regulations regarding COVID-19. As Covid-Coordinator I have been asked to clarify the rules in place:

a) There is a mask-mandate for all indoor activities at St. Marks.

b) There is a vaccine mandate for all group meetings at St. Marks, for which no exceptions are allowed by the latest Public Health Order. This vaccine mandate is also in place for all receptions. For all of those events, we are required to obtain the proof of vaccine through the vaccine passport.

c) For our Worship Services we have a mask mandate and a vaccine mandate. However, so far we have done this without asking for the proof of vaccine and have trusted you to be honest about your vaccination.

I really want to thank you: as we are reaching the 2-year mark of the pandemic, I am happy to report that we have been doing really well and have had no infections through meetings and services at St. Marks. This is due to your faithful support of all measures and your patience. Thank you for that.

If you have questions regarding the measures in place, please contact Pastor Breit (604-435-5950 or pastor.breit@shaw.ca).

God bless you! Kristina Breit

A request for donations for the Ukraine crisis:

Canadian Lutheran World Relief is calling on Canadians to pray for peace in Ukraine, and to give generously in support of the urgent humanitarian needs of all those affected.

CLWR joins its partners and millions around the world in calling for an immediate end to violence in Ukraine. Early estimates are that millions of people could be rapidly displaced, leading to a widespread humanitarian crisis. Our partners in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries are closely monitoring the situation and are preparing to respond to immediate humanitarian needs with food, shelter, emergency supplies and trauma support. With your help, we can act quickly to protect families and communities threatened by this violence, keeping borders open and creating safe pathways, and providing refuge for those fleeing the conflict.

Please give what you can by donating at clwr.org/ukraine or by calling 1-800-661-2597 (Mon-Fri 8:30am-4:00pm CST) and pray for all those who are affected by this turn of events.
