Liebe Gemeinde, liebe Freunde,

Der Juni gehört zu den hellsten Monaten des Jahres. Ich möchte mich in meiner Seele von dieser Helligkeit anstecken lassen, denn von den dunklen Wolken der Corona-Nachrichten habe ich genug und so halte ich gern Ausschau nach dem Licht und finde es in den alltäglichen Segnungen des Lebens. Auf der Suche nach Belebendem habe ich wieder einmal das schöne Buch von Anselm Grün „Vom Zauber des Alltäglichen“ aufgeschlagen, um mich erinnern zu lassen, wie doch alles im Leben berührt und durchdrungen ist von Gottes Geist. In allem begegnen wir der Schöpfung Gottes und darin dem Schöpfer. Daher bedarf es der Achtsamkeit und Behutsamkeit im Umgang mit den Dingen. Die Spiritualität Benedikts, die hier durchleuchtet, erzeugt in mir eine tiefe Dankbarkeit für die alltäglichen Dinge. die mich umgeben und erfreuen, trotz Covid 19. 

Eine Frau unserer Gemeinde sagte mir vor wenigen Tagen: „Weisst du Pastor, als wir 1945 auf der Flucht waren vom Sudetenland nach Deutschland und hatten nichts ausser unserer Kleidung auf dem Leib, das war Not! Wir sind jetzt zwar eingeschränkt, aber wir haben doch alles. Und dafür bin ich dankbar.“ Natürlich haben Sie diese Worte oder ähnliche auch schon gehört oder gar selber gesagt. Das ist ein Teil unserer Geschichte. Aber dennoch hat diese Frau mich damit an etwas Wesentliches erinnert. nämlich an die heilenden Kräfte der Dankbarkeit. Alles was auf mich einstürmt, trifft auf einen ganz anderen Grund, wenn ich in einer echen, tief gegründeten Dankbarkeit verwurzelt bin, die bei den kleinen Dingen des alltäglichen Lebens beginnen sollte. Solche Dankbarkeit, über die Dinge des Alltags, ist eine Garantie dafür, dass sie in meinen Tag einfließt, dass sie mich erfüllt als eine Kraft, die mir die Augen öffnet für alle Segnungen meines Lebens.

Wer denkt da nicht an Luthers „Kleinen Katechismus“ und seine bekannte Auslegung zum ersten Artikel des Glaubensbekenntnisses: „Ich glaube, daß mich Gott geschaffen hat samt allen Kreaturen, mir Leib und Seele, Augen, Ohren und alle Glieder, Vernunft und alle Sinne gegeben hat und noch erhält; dazu Kleider und Schuh, Essen und Trinken, Haus und Hof, Weib und Kind, Acker, Vieh und alle Güter; mit allem, was not tut für Leib und Leben, mich reichlich und täglich versorgt, in allen Gefahren beschirmt und vor allem Übel behütet und bewahrt; und das alles aus lauter väterlicher, göttlicher Güte und Barmherzigkeit, ohn all mein Verdienst und Würdigkeit: für all das ich ihm zu danken und zu loben und dafür zu dienen und gehorsam zu sein schuldig bin.Das ist gewiβlich wahr.“

BEKANNTMACHUNGEN

Freud und Leid

Im Mai verstarben Herr Raymond Weipprecht (der Sohn von Miranda Knuppe) Herr Hans Matz und Herr Theodor (Ted) Mellenthin. Wir bitten den Herrn die Verstorbenen in Gnaden anzunehmen und die trauernden Hinterbliebenen durch sein Wort zu trösten. Die Trauerfeiern werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt stattfinden, wenn das in einem größeren Rahmen wieder möglich sein wird.

Urlaub Pastor Ermisch – Vom 2.- 7. Juni haben Friederike und ich ein paar Tage frei. Pastorin Breit hat die Vertretung übernommen. Der Link für die Internet-Andachten am 7. und 14.Juni wird Ihnen in dieser Zeit von StMarksNewsletter@shaw.ca zugeschickt und nicht wie sonst von

Bis wir uns wieder in unserer Kirche versammeln können, werden wir unsere online Andachten fortsetzen, die wir Ihnen seit Ende März anbieten. In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich unseren Mitarbeitern für Ihre treue Hilfe ganz herzlich danken. Dubravko Pajalic sorgt für die Musik und die Zusammenstellung der Videos. Klaus Rathe ist unser geduldiger Kameramann und Friederike kümmert sich um den Altarschmuck und steuert die Fotos bei. Für die ersten beiden Sonntage im Juni hat Pastorin Breit die Gestaltung der Andachten übernommen. Von ihr sind dann auch die Fotos, die während dieser Gottesdienste zu sehen sein werden.

Hinweisen möchte ich ebenfalls auf die wöchentlichen Gottesdienstordnungen in englischer Sprache, die Pastorin Breit auf unserer Webseite zu Verfügung stellt (www.stmarkschurch.ca).

Öffnung der Kirche

Am 14. Mai habe ich an einer virtuellen Konferenz der Pfarrer der ELCIC teilgenommen, wo es um die Wiederaufnahme der Gottesdienste in unseren Kirchen ging. Dabei zeichnete es sich ab, dass es gut ist, in jeder Gemeinde einen Koordinator/Koordinatorin für die Organisation dieses Vorhabens zu berufen. Und so möchte ich mit Dankbarkeit bekannt geben, dass Pastorin Breit es übernommen hat, die Wiederaufnahme der Gottesdienste in unserer Kiche zu koordinieren und zu organisieren. Deshalb lesen Sie hier eine erste Bekanntmachung von Pastorin Breit:

Liebe Gemeindeglieder,

In den vergangenen Wochen haben uns viele gefragt, wann wir die Kirche wieder öffnen, wann „normale“ Gottesdienste wieder stattfinden können. Wir sagen ihnen ehrlich: wir wissen es noch nicht. In der Pressekonferenz vom 13. Mai hat Dr. Bonnie Henry erste Vorgaben gemacht, wie eine Wiederaufnahme von religiösen Feiern stattfinden kann. Wir sind nun dabei Verordnungen und Empfehlungen zu sichten und erste vorsichtige Schritte in Richtung „Öffnung“ zu gehen. Das wird aber sicher einige Zeit brauchen und es zeichnet sich bereits ab, dass wieder einmal der Teufel im Detail steckt. Bitte seien Sie geduldig mit uns. Unser Ziel ist die Sicherheit aller Beteiligten und der Schutz unserer Kirche und Gemeinde. Wir werden Sie über die Entscheidungen des Kirchenvorstandes, unsere Planungen und geplante Schritte auf dem Laufenden halten und regelmässig informieren. Für unsere Planung und Beratungen bitten wir Sie, liebe Gemeinde, um ihre Fürbitte in ihren persönlichen Gebeten.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
(2. Tim 1:7)

Dear brothers and sisters,

A few weeks ago, a colleague from Germany asked me about an idea for a Pentecost-devotion and this verse from 2. Timothy came into my mind. What I – at first – thought of in a fast brain-storming, has manifested over the last weeks and days. It is indeed what I feel we need right now and it is a comfort to remember, that it is given to us by God and that we do not need to “produce” it ourselves.

We are living through a time, in which, indeed we could and can be filled with lots of fear and timidity. The uncertainty of how economy and society develop, how our personal lives continue to be restricted and impacted and certainly when we finally can live “normal” again. I guess by now, we all have realized to some degree, the “normal” will look differently than what we have been used to in the past, that the way to a normal will not be a fast one, but one of many little steps and many changes and adjustments. This can be frightening.

Not to speak about the financial impact and personal sacrifices many in our society have made and have been forced to make, when businesses were shut down, jobs were lost and people laid off, and so forth.

And yet, Timothy reminds us, that God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.

I am positive, and I might have said this before, this new “normal” will also bring a lot of new chances and opportunities, a lot of new appreciation for things that we took for granted – like our church services. Many of you have asked us in the last weeks: when will we have services again? And we have to say: not at this point, not that fast, but we are working on it. And we do! But we want to re-open with love and love in the biblical context means: with care for each other. And that is where we need the self-discipline. We all – including us pastors – would love to come back to church and worship with you! We long for the “normal” again, but it needs to be with care for each other, with making sure, that we all stay as safe as possible.

Self-discipline means in our time: to be patient, not rush into anything that we want, but might badly regret later. It means, that we have to put our desires, wishes and longings for seeing each other, gathering as in the past, celebrating as we did, and so on – on hold. Yes, even our church services, when we come back to church again, will be different from what we have known, simply a lot of things we liked to do, were important to us, need to be adjusted to the new “normal”.

God’s power will give us the wisdom, to do what is necessary. In my eyes, there is a lot of power in love and self-discipline. With God’s power and strength we will be able to re-adjust, have new ideas, and go through the changes all together. Good to know that we do not have to come up with this all by ourselves. We end the month of May with Pentecost and begin the month of June with Trinity. God Father, Son AND Holy Spirit. Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit works in us as teacher and comforter, that he is God being close to our side – even inside of us. The spirit is the power that re-unites what is divided and scattered. He heals and establishes community. This also will be true for all of us – as a church, as families, as friends. And yet – the path to this will need to be walked in the Spirit with love and self-discipline. Even in this time, the spirit calls us to work in this world, in our city, neighbourhood, community. Through the spirit we are all gifted people, and the one gift we all can share is to pray for each other, and to care for each other with love by taking it easy and being a bit laid back. Someone joked, that it is the first time in world history, that we can save the life of others by staying on the couch and watching tv. – And maybe instead of the tv, we just call someone or write a card. So much we still can do, even if we have to be laid back and practice some discipline.

I wish all of you, that the spirit of power and love will fill you these days. That you can feel the comforter around you, the advocate speaking up for you, the helper at your side, the teacher when you read and hear scripture speaking to you. The Spirit of God surrounding and filling you.

Dear members,

over the last weeks many of you have asked when it is finally possible to re-open the church and gather once again for services in the church. Today we honestly have to say: we have no idea! On May 13th, Dr. Bonnie Henry made first recommendations and laid out basic rules how religious communities could re-gather for worship. We have now started to carefully study those regulations and recommendations and to take a first Baby-step towards a possible re-opening. However, it will be quite some time, since we already start to notice how many details we have to take into account. Our request is: Please be patient with us. We want to make sure that everyone involved, those who gather but also our church as institution is going to be safe and protected in the best way possible. We will keep you updated on the decisions made by the church council in the weeks to come, on our planning and steps we plan to take. We ask you, dear members, for your prayers for the considerations and planning ahead.
