Nachruf auf Carole
Am Abend des Buβ- und Bettages, dem 18.November, ist Carole von uns gegangen. Mit Caroles Heimgang schlieβt sich ein wunderbares und gesegnetes Kapitel unserer Gemeindegeschichte. Für beinahe 40 Jahre hat Carole das Leben der Markusgemeinde begleitet und mit geprägt.
Vielen unter Ihnen ist Carole zu einer Vertrauten geworden. Menschen haben sich bei Carole angenommen und geborgen gefühlt und sie war, besonders für ihre Kinder, Enkel aber auch viele andere, eine „Zufluchtsstätte“. Diese Zufluchtsstätte war 24/7 geöffnet ohne Ansehen der Person. Carole hat die Menschen angenommen, so wie sie waren. Für Carole war das Wort „Nächstenliebe“ keine leere Worthülse. Jesu Doppelgebot der Liebe, wir sollen Gott und unseren Nächsten lieben (Mt.22, 34f.f.), war die treibende und tragende Kraft in Caroles Leben, das konnte jeder spüren der Carole begegnet ist. Fürsorglicher und achtsamer Umgang mit Menschen, Seelsorge, das war Caroles Stärke. Das war, so mein Gefühl, die gröβte Gabe, mit der Gott sie beschenkt hat. So werden viele, auch weit über unsere Gemeindegrenze hinaus, diese engagierte und charmante deutsch-amerikanerische Arbeiterin im Weinberg des Herrn in Erinnerung behalten. Es war Caroles Lebensinhalt, dasWort Gottes in Wort und Tat zu verbreiten. Das hat sie getan solange es ihre Gesundheit erlaubte.
Als Kirchgemeinde sind wir Carole Gerber zu großem Dank verpflichtet. Nach dem frühen Tod ihres Mannes, hat Carole sehr zum Zusammenhalt der Gemeinde beigetragen und hat mir in kollegialer und geschwisterlicher Weise geholfen, meinen Weg in die Gemeinschaft der St. Markusgemeinde zu finden als Nachfoger ihres Mannes. Das war emotional und aus anderen Gründen bestimmt keine leichte Sache. Wir waren nicht immer einer Meinung, aber wir haben immer einen gemeinsamen Weg gefunden, der auf gegenseitgem Vertrauen beruhte. Carole war für mich und Friederike eine Kollegin, der wir vertraut haben und das sowohl dienstlich als auch privat. Papiere und Formulare zu finden, auszufüllen oder pünktlich einzureichen, war gewiss nicht Caroles Stärke, aber am Ende ein guter Nährboden für amüsante Geschichten, denn einen gesunden Humor hatte Carole auch.
In einem Satz: Carole war eine bemerkenswerte Frau, eine gute Weggefährtin fuer viele und ein Vorbild dafür, wie man die Liebe Gottes im täglichen Leben umsetzen kann.
Gott segne Eurer Erinnerungen an Carole.
Worte aus einem Psalm, den Carole besonders geliebt hat:
„Von allen Seiten umgibst du mich und hältst deine Hand über mir. Führe ich gen Himmel, so bist du da; bettete ich mich bei den Toten, siehe, so bist du auch da. Nähme ich Flügel der Morgenröte und bliebe am äußersten Meer, so würde auch dort deine Hand mich führen und deine Rechte mich halten.“(Psalm 139, 5.8-10)

Freud und Leid
Ende Oktober verstarb unser langjähriges Gemeindeglied Frau Helene Sommerfeld und am 18.November
Vikarin Carole Gerber, langjährige Mitarbeiterin in der Leitung der Markusgemeinde.
Wir bitten den Herrn, die Verstorbenen in Gnaden anzunehmen und die trauernden Familien mit dem Mantel seines Trostes zu umhüllen.
Ruhestandsplanung von Pastor Hardo Ermisch und Friederike
In der letzten Kirchenvorstandssitzung habe ich den Kirchenvorstand über Friederikes und meine Intention
informiert, in den Ruhestand zu gehen:
Dear Sisters and Brothers of the Church Council,
As most of you know, we have been serving our beloved St. Mark’s Congregation for 30 years. St. Mark’s has been our life: the people became family, the parsonage our home, our children grew up among you. It has been a blessed, eventful journey, and we are grateful to God that He sent us to this congregation, a Christian Community of loving and kind people on Canada’s beautiful West Coast.
But now, after more than 40 years in the ministry, the time has come for us to plan for our retirement. After prayerful considerations and discussion with trusted colleagues, we would like to inform the Church Council that it is our intention to retire in the last quarter of 2021. We will work together with you, the Council, to identify the exact date of our retirement.
We will leave St. Mark’s with heavy hearts but be comforted by the wonderful memories that will stay with us.
We admit that we are already experiencing some feelings of grief and loss in thinking about the end of this long and wonderful relationship with you and this church, and what retirement will mean to us personally and professionally. Serving you together, as Pfarrerehepaar, has brought us considerable fulfillment and joy. At the same time it is our prayer and hope that God will provide new and yet unknown opportunities for us to continue to have a meaningful life together with family and friends.
Schließung der Kirche
Es tut uns von Herzen Leid Ihnen mitteilen zu müssen, dass unsere Kirche wieder geschlossen ist für den Rest des Jahres, einschließlich dem 1.Januar 2021. Wenn die Regierung es erlaubt, planen wir die Kirche am 10.Januar 2021 wieder zu öffnen.
Pastorin Breit (604 435 5950) und ich (604 874 8427) sind jeder Zeit telefonisch für Sie zu erreichen.
Wir sind gerne für Sie da.
Natürlich werden wir Ihnen auch weiterhin unsere wöchentlichen Andachten ins Haus bringen.

Ohne Dubravko, Klaus und Friederike waere das nicht moeglich, aber alle drei haben sich bereit erklärt,

Weil wir auch am 24.und 25.Dezember keine Gottesdienste in der Kirche halten können, werden wir für den Heiligen Abend / Weihnachten einen on-line-Gottesdienst für Sie vorbereiten unter Mitwirkung der Sopranistin Ingrid Faedo und unseres Organisten Dubravko Pajalic. Auch am 31.Dezember werden wir mit einer Andacht zum Jahresabschluss zu finden sein.
Bitte sagen Sie dieses weiter, wenn sie die Möglichkeit haben, denn wir können nicht alle erreichen, die am
Heiligen Abend in die Kirche kommen würden.
Beethoven-Ehrung
Für Mitte Dezember bereiten wir in Zusammenarbeit mit dem deutschen Generalkonsulat eine on-line Beethoven-Ehrung aus Anlass seines 250. Geburtstages vor. Vom 16.Dezember an wird die Ehrung auf unserem you-tube-chanel über unsere Webseite zu finden sein. Auch das deutsche und französische Generalkonsulat sowie das Büro des österreichischen Honorarkonsuls werden diese Sendung zeigen.

Dear Friends,
I recently stumbled across these words. I have known them for many years, in fact – for a long time during my university studies, they hung in my room on a piece of paper. I didn’t forget about them, but was reminded of them again, when I started to prepare the services for Advent and Christmas. In the English lectionary they are one of the readings on the Third Sunday of Advent.
This is the central message of Advent and Christmas – “Do not fear, for your God is coming.”
And yet, as our church has been closed down once again, as we once again move to online-services and virtual meetings, as case numbers are rising and we have entered the darker time of the year, I have been wondering what I have to share. For different reasons, I have been thinking back to my beginnings at St. Marks and was reminded of the well-known hymn: O Holy Night. At the end of the second stanza it says “The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, to our weaknesses no stranger.”
The words felt like a warm touch: born to be our friend – he knows our need – to our weaknesses no stranger. How much better can be described, what we are celebrating and expecting with Christmas. A God that comes to save, to strengthen weak knees and to strengthen tired hands.
And we all are needy these days: missing hugs and closeness, missing friends and the time shared outside and inside, missing the Bazaar and the church with its Christmas Tree – yes, it will be the first time in the history of St. Marks, that no big tree will be standing in the church during Advent, missing … – we all are missing things, feel our needs and our weaknesses; we all feel how tired this all makes.
I find comfort in the words from Isaiah and from the hymn: I do not have to “make” new strength – it something given to us. The strength to endure and move on.
I do not have to make hope, to let the hope fill me: the hope that God has not forgotten about is, but comes to with love and care, with grace and mercy.
Yes, this is also our hope in these days – A God that comes, to save us from the darkness, from our own darkness, from fear, guilt, shame. I remember that a colleague called us to pay attention to the verses of this song: “Long lay the world in sin and error pining,/ Till He appear’d and the soul felt its worth./ A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,/ For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.”
I wish all of you a blessed time of Advent, a blessed Christmas and a new year, in which we can meet again! And I wish you the voice of rejoice – even in a weary world. Because our God comes, he comes to save.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
I am very sorry to have to tell you, that after a long battle with cancer Carole Gerber passed away on Wednesday, November 18th. May God grant her refuge and peace in the shadow of His wings.
COVID – Update
Once again thank you to all who have helped gathering in the safest way possible: for distancing, keeping your hands clean and wearing masks. I know it is not always easy, but we honestly appreciate your efforts.
With the new public health order from Nov. 19th, all indoor and in-person-worship services have been put on hold. In order to allow a reliable planning for all at St. Marks, we are cancelling all in-person-services for the month of December. This also includes all Christmas services.
We hope to be able to re-open on the first weekend of January, pending the orders and regulations from the government in place at that time. We will keep you updated and inform you about our plans as the new year approaches.
We will continue to provide pre-recorded online-services as well as liturgies for a devotional worship time at home. Both are sent out by email or can be found on our website under the tabs “Andacht” or “English devotion”.
