Liebe Gemeinde, liebe Freunde,

„Am Straßenrand aufgerichtete Kreuze: Einige sind schlicht, einige sind verziert oder mit Blumen geschmückt. Manche tragen auf dem Querbalken die Buchstaben eines Namens. Bei einigen Kreuzen ist die Schrift schon verwittert und der Name kaum zu entziffern.
Was wollen diese Kreuze? Was machen diese Kreuze mit uns, wenn wir sie im Vorbeifahren – vielleicht nur aus den Augenwinkeln – wahrnehmen?
Straßenkreuze mahnen und warnen uns: Fahr langsam. Fahr vorsichtig. Trink keinen Alkohol – am besten überhaupt keinen -, wenn du Auto fahren willst. Verfalle in keinen Geschwindigkeitsrausch. Imponiergehabe auf der Straße ist fehl am Platz. Reagiere deine Gefühle nicht am Steuer ab.
Straßenkreuze erinnern aber auch an konkrete Menschen: Da ist einer am Morgen zur Arbeit gefahren, eine andere fährt abends in die Disco, ein Paar fährt ins Wochenende, will vielleicht Freunde besuchen, eine Frau fährt zum Einkaufen … Niemand von ihnen erreicht das Ziel.
Jedes Straßenkreuz steht für ein abgebrochenes Leben. Und jeder verunglückte Mensch hinterlässt eine kleine Welt, die ärmer wird. Da sind Freunde, Angehörige, Mitschüler, Kollegen, denen ein Teil ihres eigenen Lebens wegbricht, weil auf einmal jemand fehlt, der doch zu ihnen gehörte …
Als Christen sehen wir aber in den Kreuzen nicht nur ein Signal des Todes, ein Zeichen für weniger Leben – ein Minuszeichen.
Als Christen sehen wir in den Kreuzen auch den Hinweis auf Jesus Christus, von dem es heißt, dass er nicht im Tod geblieben ist. Wir glauben: Mit Christus haben wir bei Gott eine Zukunft. Das Kreuz steht also für mehr Leben – und so wird es sozusagen zu einem Pluszeichen.
Zwar wird damit auch für Christen nicht erträglicher, was da auf unseren Straßen Tag für Tag passiert, aber ein Straßenkreuz kann so eben nicht nur Mahnung oder Erinnerung ausdrücken, sondern auch Trost.
Straßenkreuze weisen über sich hinaus. Sie sagen uns: Was bleibt, ist mehr als ein Mahnmal oder ein Erinnerungszeichen am Fahrbahnrand. Abgebrochenes wird wieder heil. Das Leben endet nicht an einem Baum, sondern kehrt zurück zu Gott.
Der Apostel Paulus schreibt an die Korinther: Das Wort vom Kreuz ist eine Torheit denen, die verloren werden; uns aber, die wir selig werden, ist’s eine Gotteskraft. 1.Korinther 1,18“ (Quelle WLP 2/2007/56)

Freud und Leid
Das Sakrament der Heiligen Taufe empfing Scarlett MacDonell. Wir bitten den Herr den Lebensweg des Kindes zu segnen und Eltern, Paten und Großeltern Weisheit zu geben, ihr im lebendigen Glauben an Jesus Christus Vorbild zu sein.

Es wurden getraut und haben den Segen des dreieinigen Gottes für ihre Ehe erhalten Herr Stephan Till & Frau Sandra Hannemann. Wir bitten den Herrn, den gemeinsamen Lebensweg des Paares zu segnen.

Aus diesem Leben abberufen wurden Frau Helga Bechert, Herr Siefried Selke und Herr Siegfried Welsch. Wir bitten den Herrn, die Verstorbenen in Gnaden anzunehmen und die trauernden Familien mit dem Mantel seines Trostes zu umhüllen.

Vom Kirchenvorstand
In seiner Sitzung im März hat sich der Kirchenvorstand neu konstituiert: Präsident wurde Herr Jürgen Schroth, Vizepräsident und Schatzmeister Herr Louis Eggers, Sekretärin Frau Ingeborg von Maydell, Finanzsekretärin Frau Agnes Drissler,. Wir wünschen allen zwölf Mitgliedern des Kirchenvorstandes Gottes Segen für ihre Arbeit und danken für ihre Bereitschaft zur Mitarbeit in unserer Gemeinde in dieser Form.

Termine des Pastors
Vom 20.+21.April befinden sich Pastor Ermisch und Vikarin Gerber zusammen mit dem Kirchenvorstand auf einer Studienfreizeit.
Vom 23.-25.April ist Pastor Ermisch zur Bishop’s Study Conference der ELCIC – BC Synod.
Vom 15.Mai-14.Juni nimmt Pastor Ermisch seinen Jahresurlaub. Die Vertretung übernimmt Vikarin Gerber (604-299-8434).

LUMS – Einsatz
Am 12.Mai wollen wir wieder ein von uns gekochtes Essen in der First United Church an East Hastings ausgeben. Wie immer brauchen wir Personen, die für 10-12 Leute ein Gulasch kochen und Helfer, die bei der Essensausgabe mitmachen. Listen werden beizeiten ausgelegt. Frau Petra Schmidt (604-589-8918) steht für Anfragen zur Verfügung.
Außerdem können Sie im Pfarramt (604-874-8427) anrufen.

“Why do you seek the Living One among the dead?” “He is not here, but He had risen.” Luke 24: 5b & 6a

Dear Friends,

It was obvious that eight-year-old Stephen’s mental retardation was becoming even more severe. His Sunday schoolteacher did her best to include Stephen in the class room activities and to avoid situations which might prompt his classmates to laugh at him. In April she gave each of the eight children in her class and a colorful empty plastic egg and instructed them to place inside the egg an object that represented new life in spring. Fearing that Stephen might not have caught on, and not wanting to embarrass him, the teacher had the children place all the containers on the desk so that she could open them. The first had a tiny flower in it. “What a lovely sign of new life,” said the teacher. One of the students couldn’t help but erupt, “I brought that one!” Next came a rock. The teacher assumed this must be Stephen’s since rocks don’t symbolize new life. But Billy shouted that this rock had moss on it, and moss represented new life. “Very good, Billy” agreed the teacher. A butterfly flew from the third container and another child bragged that her choice was the best of all. The fourth container was empty. This must be Stephen’s, thought the teacher, quickly reaching for a different one. “Teacher, please don’t skip mine,” interrupted Stephen. “But it is empty, Stephen”, said the teacher gently. “That’s right,” said Stephen. “The tomb was empty, and that represents new life for everyone.” Later that summer Stephen’s conditions worsened and he died. At his funeral on his casket mourners found eight colorful plastic eggs, all of them empty.

To stand at the fresh grave of someone whom we loved very much is overwhelming. One asks oneself if it is really true because the final separation is such a shocking truth. The women who had been with Jesus had experienced His horrible death and came with spices and perfumes to anoint his body and the tomb was EMPTY. They knew that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead and He had told them that He would come back again! “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” (I Corinthians l5: 22) After His resurrection, Jesus approached His disciples in different places and at different times. Sometimes they thought that they had seen a ghost… But the resurrected Jesus ate with them, showed them his scarred hands and feet and told them not to be so doubtful but to be believing. His greeting always was, “Peace be with you!”

Jesus knows each one of us intimately and He wants to personally strengthen our Easter faith! In the Emmaus story (Matthew 24:13-35) it tells us that, He opened their minds. He held a Bible study with these two disciples, opening up the scriptures of prophecy showing them that it was written in ancient times that all this would happen. We have the privilege of owning a Bible with all of its incredible wisdom and truths. We have the privilege and choice of different Bible Studies. May our daily prayers include this, “Lord reveal yourself to us.” He wants to open up the scriptures with unimaginable wisdom and truth for us. Every budding tree, every blooming flower, every chirping bird witnesses to the fact that, “Jesus is Alive!” Jesus comes to each one so that our lives are richer and more fulfilled today, tomorrow and into all eternity. May your Easter time be an awakening to the resurrection power of our Lord Jesus Christ.
